Government schools started back in our town today. Austin's (5 min away) don't start 'till next Tuesday, but the district is apparently pretty sadistic here, so they're starting before the ides of August, even. So, today was our first Not-Back-To-School day. H would have started kindergarten today if we didn't love her so much. It was a roller coaster of a day, even though I didn't send my baby off to the nearest government institution. The weather was uncharacteristically nice yesterday and today (well, this morning, anyway. We just had rain a few minutes ago). So, I was thinking about taking her to the park and having a picnic, which we've never done! Then I was thinking of going to the library to find some books she's been wanting, which we've also never done, oddly enough! Then we had co-op to go to this afternoon. Well, before we could get out the door, I already wasn't sure about the picnic because I wasn't sure how much time I should allot for that, plus the library to get to co-op on time. H made that decision for me. There was a cat on our widowsill, which she promptly ran off. It went and laid down in the grass a few feet from the window and watched H for a while, then got bored and just looked around. After the cat got bored with us, I put some frozen waffles in the toaster for her, then came to the back of the house to see what B had said to me on AIM. I went to give H her waffles and she was nowhere to be found. Luckily now we have a dog, because he was staring at the front door, waiting for H to come back in. If he hadn't been there, I'd have been freaking out like the last time she ran off. So I, in my nightshirt and panties, yelled H's name out the open window, and just then saw her come running back, in her pj top and panties. She had gotten up at 3 am to use the bathroom and hadn't gotten her bottoms back on. So, of course, I had to take some privilege away, so we didn't go to the park or have a picnic. I didn't want to totally ruin her very first ever Not-Back-To-School day, so we went to the library and checked out Sam the Sea Cow, which she's been wanting for a month or 2, and 2 Arthur books. She read Sam the Sea Cow on the way to co-op, and read one of the Arthur books on the way home. In fact, she had started reading the Arthur book on the way there, since she had already finished with Sam, then decided to start it over when we got back in the car. We had a good time at co-op, but H did cry a couple of times (something she doesn't normally do) because a smaller kid wouldn't let her play with the train car she wanted to play with. I did take a picture of her in front of our timeline for her first day NOT in kindergarten!
