Thanks, kernyen, for your comment. I did finally hear from the lady. She emailed while I was out of town. Woohoo for web-based email. Lol We picked up Ginger on Saturday...added 50 miles to our trip to pick her up from the farm. She was *such* a sweet dog, but was so lonely for her sister, and so used to living on a farm and having free oportunity to roam far and wide that it was just too mean to lock her up in our backyard and in our little house, so we gave her back on Monday. She wasn't eating at all and was just laying around moping. She did finally eat Sunday night/Monday morning (I just left food out for her all the time 'cause that's what the lady did.) We agonized over whether we could make it work and finally decided that she was just too big and needed too much exercise for us to keep her. If we could have taken her to a park and let her off her leash to go romp once a day, it may have worked out, but leash laws prohibit it. I felt so bad about having to give her back, but I think she will be much happier with a family with a much bigger yard. And she was always kind of uneasy in the house and kept following us around because she'd never been allowed in the house before she came to stay with us.
So, I looked online and found Hound Rescue and they had a sweet beagle pup named Cordelia. So, I emailed the contact lady and she said that Cordelia was being adopted, but that there was a male beagle that a vet had taken in as a stray, that he needed a home and would we be willing to give him a foster home with the option to adopt if he works out for us. I said yes and finally yesterday at about 4 in the afternoon, Huey came home. He's such a good dog! He hasn't tried to dig at all, hasn't barked or howled. He started to lift his leg to mark the piggy cage once, but after we told him No, he hasn't tried again. He seems to be housebroken and crate trained. In fact, I'm not really sure he even needs to be put in a crate at night. Last night he whined to get out because B and I still had lights on in the back room while he was in the crate. But he stopped when we turned the lights out and went to our bedroom. But he just got neutered the day before yesterday, and he still might mark in the house if we aren't watching him, and I'm still not sure I want him loose in the house at night, so the crate it is. When they found him, he had a collar but no tags, smelled awful, had really bad tartar, and his upper left canine was broken off. So, they neutered him and pulled the broken tooth, gave him a bath and he's good as new. They say that his teeth look like he's about 2-3 years old..probably 3 because he's got some gray hair on his face. He's such a sweety. Lots of kids came up to pet him while he was at the vet's office and he did fine with them. We saw a little one when we were at Petco with him and he just stood there and let her pet him. So I think he and H will get along great.
